Amid reports of increasing passport abandonment, India’s ranking has dropped by five points this year in the global passport index, according to the Henley Passport Index released by citizenship advisory firm Henley & Partners. Singapore has topped the index for the second consecutive year, while Japan secured second.
India’s ranking stands at 85th, a five-percentage drop from 2024, which was 80th in the global passport index. Only 22 out of the world’s 99 passports have fallen in the Henley Passport Index ranking over the past decade.

Notably, China’s passport has ascended to 60th rank in 2025 from 94th place in 2015, marking a significant climb in the passport ranking. The US passport, meanwhile, experienced the second biggest fall between 2015 and 2025, plummeting from second rank to ninth this year.
The biggest faller, the Venezuelan passport, was ranked 85th, while the same was 46th in the world in 2024, suggesting a significant drop. Vanuatu is the third-biggest faller, losing six places from 48th to 54th, followed by the British passport.
According to the release, US nationals currently constitute the single largest cohort of applicants for alternative residence and citizenship, accounting for a staggering 21 percent of all investment migration programs applications.

Pakistan and Bangladesh’s rankings stand at 103rd and 100th, respectively, in 2024. India’s ranking drop comes amid reports of increased passport surrendering. Over 216,000 Indian citizens gave up their citizenship in 2023 alone, surrendering their passports, allegedly expecting a better quality of life.
The Henley index is considered the standard reference tool for global citizens and sovereign states when assessing where a passport ranks on the global mobility spectrum.
