Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) Haryana state chief Nafe Singh Rathee and one party worker were shot dead by unidentified men. The INLD leader was travelling when he went under attack at the Bahadurgarh town in Jhajjar district. He was in an SUV vehicle when the attackers shot him, according to INLD leader Abhay Chautala.

Mr Abhay Chautala blamed the government for not providing enough security to Rathee despite having a security threat to his life. He also demanded the resignation of the chief minister and home minister. The attack on a political leader at a time when the country is set to face a general election raises questions about the law and order situation of the ruling party in the state. Congress leader and former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda accused the state government of failing to maintain law and order.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the former chief minister paid tribute to the INLD leader and condolence to his family.

“The news of INLD State President Shri Nafe Singh Rathi being shot dead in Haryana is very sad. This reflects the law and order of the state. This incident made it clear that law and order has become bankrupt. Today no one is feeling safe in the state. My tribute to the departed soul and deep condolences to the family. I pray to God to give strength to the family members to bear this loss. I wish for the speedy recovery of the security personnel injured in the attack,” the Congress leader wrote on his social media platform.

The police have however begun an investigation into the incident, with the Home Minister Anil Vij saying that he has informed the officials to take immediate action.

“I have asked the officials to take immediate action in this matter. STF has also swung into action…The incident is being investigated,” the home minister heard saying in a video shared by news agency ANI.

Rathee had faced legal issues in January 2023 in the suicide case of the son of former BJP minister Mange Ram Rathi, Jagdish Rathi. He was declared the main accused in the case. But the Court later dismissed allegations as political controversy, Indian Express reported.
