The Karnataka BJP on Friday slammed the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government over the interfaith couple being attacked in Haveri district and accused that the rise in crime against women in the state reflects widespread lawlessness and how criminals conduct themselves boldly without fear of police intervention.

Taking to X, BJP Karnataka wrote: The audacious act by Muslim youths, brutally attacking and abducting a interfaith couple in broad daylight, underscores the government“s failure to ensure citizen safety.”

“Siddaramaiah”s administration has completely failed in addressing this alarming trend, allowing radical moral policing to flourish and jeopardizing the security of the state”s residents”, it further added.

The incident occurred in Haveri”s Hangal on January 8, when seven men allegedly broke into a hotel room booked by an interfaith couple and attacked them. Initially, Hangal Police had registered three people in the moral policing case. Then, following the survivor’s court statement, Police booked gang rape cases against all seven men.

In the case of moral policing, three men identified as Aftab Makabul, Madarsab Mohammad, and Samiulla who also belong to a minority community, have been arrested, Police reports.

Haveri SP Anshu Kumar said: “One is in the hospital. The other 3 are on the run. We will arrest the remaining accused as well. We weren”t told about rape earlier. We came to know about this only through media report about the video by the woman. We have booked a case under the appropriate section, investigation is ongoing,” ANI quotes.
