The new chief minister of Jharkhand Champai Soren faced the floor test on Monday. The Champai government passed the majority test by acquiring 47 votes in the 81-member Assembly. The floor test has began at 11 am. Former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren too arrived in the assembly today with tight security.

The Champai Soren government was formed after a massive political crisis followed by the arrest of Hemant Soren by the Enforcement Directorate in an alleged money laundering case to a land scam. By the order of the special court of Ranchi, Hemant Soren, the executive President of the Jharkhand was permitted to take part in the special session as a member of the assembly, reports NDTV.

Surrounded by the cops, the former chief minister reached the assembly to cast his vote in the majority test. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has 29 seats, its ally Congress 17, and RJD and CPI (ML) have just one seat in the 81-member assembly. This in total adds up to 48.

Meanwhile, with the opposition, the BJP has 26 MLAs and its ally All Jharkhand Student’s Union has three.

The JMM leaders asserted that they were sure of winning the majority and that the floor test “is just a formality”. To avoid any kind of horse-trading attempt, the MLAs have flown to Hyderabad to keep the flock together. “Our MLAs are united… We have the support of 48 to 50 legislators,” state minister Alamgir Alam told reporters on their return from Hyderabad this evening.

Meanwhile, Biranchi Narain, Chief Whip of the BJP in the state, said the coalition was set to lose the vote of confidence. According to the report, some of the JMM MLAs, who did not support Champai Soren may not participate in the floor test.

However, ahead of the trust vote, the Congress on Monday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are in for a “big shock” as the INDIA bloc will easily win the vote of confidence, reports The Telegraph Online.

Champai Soren along with senior Congress leader Alamgir Alam and RJD leader Satyanand Bhokta took oath on February 2 over 24 hours after Hemant Soren’s arrest.
