As the controversial ‘one nation, one election’ received a Cabinet nod today, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said he has consistently opposed the system, calling it a “solution in search of a problem.”
The MP asserted the system would destroy federalism and compromise democracy, which are part of the basic structure of the constitution. “Multiple elections aren’t a problem for anyone except Modi and Shah. Just because they have a compulsive need to campaign in even municipal and local body elections does not mean that we need simultaneous polls, Owaisi wrote in an X post, adding that frequent and periodic elections improve democratic accountability.

The Cabinet cleared the proposal for the one nation, one election policy after the delegation headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind submitted its report to the Union Cabinet.
The move, which was aimed at conducting Lok Sabha elections and state assembly elections simultaneously, for allegedly cutting down the poll expenses and reducing logistical hurdles, was one of the saffron party’s promises in its election manifesto. The bill would be introduced in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament, according to sources.
