Trinamool MP Saket Gokhale Claims His Bank Account Blocked, Attacks "ED Under Modi"

Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale has strongly criticised HDFC Bank, Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Prime Minister Modi after his account was suddenly blocked. Taking to social media platform X, Gokhale expressed his outrage, labelling the situation “unbelievable” and claiming that the bank’s action was triggered by a news article.

An ardent critic of PM Modi and the NDA government in the centre, Gokhale explained that HDFC Bank blocked his account after seeing a report in the Times of India mentioning an ED case against him. The case in question dates back two years, with Gokhale questioning the bank’s decision, as no formal order was issued by the ED. He noted that the bank merely acted on the article’s mention of the ED’s involvement.

The MP called this a clear example of “terrorism unleashed by the ED under Modi,” alleging that the accounts of opposition members are being frozen illegally based on outdated information. He further questioned if this tactic of blocking accounts due to “news articles” was becoming a new form of silencing dissent.

“This is the level of terrorism unleashed by the ED under Modi. Accounts of Opposition get frozen illegally only because there’s a “news article” about a 2 year old case. Is randomly blocking bank accounts of the Opposition based on “news articles” the new way of silencing us?,” he asked.

Saket Gokhale was arrested by the ED in January 2023 on charges of money laundering, linked to allegations that he misappropriated crowdfunded money for personal use. He was granted bail by the Supreme Court in April 2023.
