The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has announced the release of Rs 3 crores from the government to translate the Madras High Court judgements from English to Tamil, on Monday.

The allocation of the fund is “in line with the Tamil Nadu government”s position that Tamil should be made the official language of the Madras High Court”, said the CM in an official statement which was issued in Tamil.

The amount will be allocated to the State”s Official Language (Legislative) Commission.

Translating the HC’s judgments to Tamil was also in “consonance with the State’s “historic resolution” of adopting a bi-lingual policy in the Assembly in 1968 under the leadership of CN Annadurai that permits the State to use both Tamil and English for official communication”, reads the statement.

“Proud to announce a significant step towards realising Thalaivar Kalaignar”s vision!”, MK Stalin wrote on X (formerly Twitter) sharing a copy of the order on Monday.

“In tribute to his [CN Annadurai”s] centenary year, we”re allocating 3 crores to translate Madras High Court judgments into Tamil”, said Mr Stalin.

“This aligns with our commitment to making Tamil as an official language in the Madras High Court. I also recall Hon”ble CJI Thiru D.Y.Chandrachud”s efforts championing the cause of regional languages accessibility to judgments”, he added.

Through this, Stalin aims to benefit the public as well as the lawyers. Besides the currently allocated Rs 3 crores, further amounts will be initiated based on the requirement.

Tamil Nadu government is following the two-language policy since 1968. It encourages Tamil in all the departments.

The State Official Language Legislative Commission (SOLLC) and the Tamil wing of the legal department are already working in translating the Union laws, ordinances, rules, and announcements in Tamil.

Mr Stalin is in a long-term fight with the Union governments attempt to make Hindi as the official language of nation. DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) protesting against the language dominance is saying that the BJP is trying to wipe out other native languages by promoting Hindi.
