Manipur CM’s Brother, Arambai Tenggol Founder Threats Contradict Biren’s ‘Doctored’ Claim

The N Biren Singh’s BJP government has come forward claiming that the audio tapes put out in the public domain by The Wire after submitting to the Commission of Inquiry to be “doctored”. He had also referred to the news report as “anti-national” and as an attempt to disrupt the peace process between the Kukis and the Meiteis. Meanwhile, the chief minister’s brother Rajendro Nongthingbam and the BJP’s Rajya Sabha member L Sanajaoba have issued threats on Facebook to the ‘Meitei’ community who they think have passed on the tapes to the “enemy”.

Sanajaoba in his Facebook post wrote, “Come on Meitei… don’t even know the leader… I don’t want to talk, it will be problematic, will show by action… Enemies are secondary, Meitei traitors should be handled first… don’t want to talk more…”

Sanajaoba and Nongthingbam have said that the ‘Meitei’ has been “sold out” and that they would soon find the “traitors” within their community, reports The Wire.

Meanwhile, the chief minister’s brother Rajendra Nongthingbam wrote on his Facebook page, “Those who are giving out news to the enemy, you are Meitei and don’t think that we won’t unmask you, traitor”.

Later the post was replaced as follows, “We need to find the Meitei traitors who sold us out”.

Sanajaoba is also the founder of the Arambai Tenggol, the controversial and radical Meitei group. This group has been accused of openly brandishing arms in police vehicles during the ethnic conflict. They are also accused of attacking Kukis in the valley districts, as well as Meitei citizens and police personnel who disagree with its actions. Moreover, the chief minister is said to have a close connection with Sanajaoba and has been meeting with the members of Arambai Tenggol.

These threats, however, indicate that the audio tapes are authentic and not ‘doctored’, reports The Wire.

The earlier report of the Wire which was published on August 19 said that it was unable to independently establish that the person speaking on the recording about the violence in Manipur is indeed Biren Singh. However, the date, subject, and contents of the meeting held at the chief minister’s official residence with some of the participants, none of them were ready to be identified because of the fear for their safety.

Some of the participants in the meeting asserted that the voice belonged to the CM and he did say all the things in the recordings in their presence.
