Mercer’s worldwide quality of living ranking for 2023 positions Hyderabad at 153, placing behind Pune at 154 and Bengaluru at 156. In the rankings, Austria”s Vienna retains the top position. And in India, Chennai secures fourth position at 161, followed by Mumbai, Kolkata, and New Delhi at 164, 170, and 172 respectively.

Mercer’s Quality of Living Survey evaluates data on the practicalities of daily life for expatriate employees and their families and it forms the basis of annual ranking of the quality of living in many prevalent assignment locations, says Mercer website. It intend to assist multinational companies and governments to decide compensation strategies for their international assignees. To calculate quality of living, Mercer survey uses New York City as the base city in comparing the factors taken into account for the global ranking. In 2023, 241 cities from across 5 continents have been taken into consideration.

Sharing the news of Hyderabad“s position in the survey, former Industries Minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President, KT Rama Rao (KTR) wrote on social media platform X, “Hyderabad is yet again rated as the best Indian city by Mercer. This is the 6th time since 2015. Congratulations to all Hyderabadis.”

While Vienna attained first spot, Switzerland”s Zurich, and New Zealand”s Auckland, is at second and third spots, respectively. The survey was last published in pre-covid 2019, and Vienna maintained the top spot even then. Meanwhile, survey also marked places with lower quality of living and it comprises several African cities – N’Djamena (Chad) at 236 , Bangui (Central African Republic) at 239 and Khartoum (Sudan) at 241.
