A shocking video from Madhya Pradesh’s Katni has surfaced, showing the brutal beating of a Dalit boy and a woman, his relative, inside a GRP police station. The video, which dates back to October 2023, has recently gone viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage and leading to an official probe.

The CCTV footage depicts officers mercilessly assaulting the boy, Deepak Vanshkar, and his relative, Kusum Vanshkar, after they were taken into custody on suspicion of theft. According to reports, Deepak is a known criminal with 19 cases registered against him since 2017. Authorities had declared a reward of Rs 10,000 for Deepak, who had gone absconding after committing theft. Police claim that some stolen items were recovered from the accused before the incident.

Speaking on the matter, Katni Superintendent of Police, Abhijeet Kumar Ranjan, stated, “This matter has come to my notice, and an investigation will be handed over to ASP Dr. Santosh Dehariya.” He further added that the incident involved GRP Katni station in-charge Aruna Vahane and other officers. Ranjan confirmed that the viral video would be thoroughly investigated.

A statement from SP Railway Jabalpur stated: “The visuals are from October 2023. The person shown in the video is a relative of a notorious criminal, Deepak Vanshkar. After the video came to light, the police station in-charge at GRP Katni was suspended, and an inquiry has been ordered.”

Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari took to X (formerly Twitter) to condemn the incident, saying, “Katni GRP brutally beat up 15-year-old Deepraj and his grandmother! The BJP government is leaving no stone unturned in oppressing the backward and tribals! This game of political malice must stop!”

Patwari also questioned Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s ability to provide safety to Dalit families, asking, “Can the Chief Minister of our state provide security to any Dalit family?”

AAP leader Sanjay Singh joined the chorus of criticism, labelling the incident as evidence of “BJP’s Jungle Raj in Madhya Pradesh.” Singh claimed, “BJP is taking revenge of its electoral defeat from Dalits, backward classes and tribals.”

Even BJP leader Khushbu Sundar condemned the violence, tweeting, “This is unacceptable. Humans have to be treated like humans. Every Dalit has the same red blood in their body, they breathe the same air and live in the same world.” She used the hashtag #EveryLifeMatters to underline her message.

In Indian Railways, GRP or Government Railway Police is a police force in responsible for maintaining law and order on railway premises, including platforms, stations, trains, and surrounding areas. They work in collaboration with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), but while the RPF focuses on the protection of railway property and ensuring the safety of passengers, the GRP deals with criminal activities and enforcing general law and order on railway premises. Their duties include investigating crimes, maintaining public safety, and assisting passengers in distress.
