Salim Engineer, the Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, has voiced concern over the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. In a statement to the media, the JIH Vice President said that they are highly concerned over vindictive misuse of central agencies to target the opposition. The body expressed its strong disapproval of the arrest of Delhi CM by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
JIH said the timing of the arrest indicates the intentions behind it, which particularly align with the approaching Lok Sabha elections. It voiced suspicious over the series of arrests of opposition leaders like Shibu Soren of Jharkhand, Kavita of BRS, and many others. According to Salim Engineer, the arrests appear to be a clear pattern in the modus operandi of incumbent government.
Listing out the alleged pattern, the Vice President said, “First, the political funding of the opposition is throttled. Second, the opposition”s top leadership is targeted by the ED. Third, if they come out on bail after being arrested, they are invited to join the ruling party. The whole process is completely unethical, unconstitutional, and autocratic. This poses a grave danger to our democracy.”
Prof Salim Engineer averred that the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind feels that the misuse of autonomous government institutions for political purposes weakens the people”s trust in the bureaucracy and also becomes a source of corruption in government departments. JIH accentuated their opinion that anybody who has committed a crime should be punished “but a person is innocent until convicted by the court.”
