Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) President Mayawati on Friday demanded the party founder Kanshi Ram be awarded with Bharat Ratna. Expressing her disagreement on X, she wrote, “We welcome the recent awarding of Bharat Ratna, but the neglect of Dalit personalities in this regard is not correct…”

Earlier today, former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh was awarded India’s highest civilian award- Bharat Ratna along with three others. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the award on X hailing the former prime minister for his “incomparable contributions”.

Commenting on the exclusion of Dalit personalities, the BSP leader wrote on X that all the personalities who have been awarded with Bharat Ratna by the present BJP government are welcome. “But in this matter, it is not appropriate to disrespect and ignore especially the Dalit personalities. The government must pay attention to this also,” she further added.

In the follow-up post, she alleged that Kanshi Ram, the founder of BSP was neglected without honouring him with the prestigious award. She equating the contributions of B R Ambedkar and Kanshi Ram said that the father of the constitution was honoured with the title after a long wait by the government of Shri VP Singh. She then claimed that the struggle of Ambedkar which was carried out by Kanshi Ram who was referred to as the ‘messiah of Dalit’ was neglected without awarding him with Bharat Ratna.
