Nitin Nabin formally assumed charge as the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP on Tuesday, marking a generational shift in the party’s top leadership.

At 45, he is the youngest leader ever to hold the post, succeeding JP Nadda, who is now a Union minister.

The change of guard took place at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior party leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and several others.

Ahead of the formal ceremony, Nabin visited several prominent religious places in the capital, including Jhandewalan Temple, Valmiki Temple, the Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place, and Gurdwara Bangla Sahib. He was accompanied by Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva and Delhi minister Parvesh Saheb Singh Verma during the visits.

As per India Today,  the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has provided Z-category security to the newly appointed BJP chief based on an Intelligence Bureau threat perception report.

The security cover included CRPF commandos and was granted a few days before he officially took charge.

A five-time MLA from Bihar’s Bankipur Assembly constituency, Nitin Nabin, has remained undefeated since entering electoral politics.

He first won a bypoll in 2006 with a margin of nearly 60,000 votes and continued his winning streak, securing his most recent victory last year by over 51,000 votes.

The son of late BJP leader and former MLA Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, Nabin has long been regarded as a strong organisational leader with roots in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

He came into national focus after playing a key role as the BJP co-in-charge of the 2023 Chhattisgarh Assembly elections, where the party registered a major victory by defeating the Congress government led by Bhupesh Baghel.

The BJP went on to win 10 of the 11 Lok Sabha seats in the state in the 2024 general elections.

Nabin’s elevation to the top party post came unopposed after he emerged as the sole candidate in the BJP’s organisational election.

Prime Minister Modi, along with several senior leaders including JP Nadda, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari, proposed his candidature.

Born in Ranchi, Nitin Nabin is married to Deepmala Shrivastava and has two children.

He had been serving as the working president of the BJP and was also handling the road construction and urban development portfolios in the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government before resigning to take on his new national role.
