One such story has been born in India, a society where age often dictates the path ahead and choosing to study after starting a career is troublesome. Odd to the convention, a 64-year-old man from Odisha, Jay Kishore Pradhan, a retired SBI deputy manager, cleared the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET UG) in 2020.

A long-cherished passion for exploring the medical field, the journey of the former SBI manager with a rejuvenated sense of purpose has become an inspiration to millions. The 64-year-old man managed to achieve his dream at a time when most think the end of their professional life is and wishe for retirement. Defying the stereotype, the Odisha man proved an outstanding exception by showing the determination of a fresh aspirant and then achieving the goal.
A dreams of becoming a doctor since his youth, Pradhan’ started his MBBS journey before his retirement in 2016 and took a systematic approach to prepare for the NEET, enrolling in an online coaching program that provided structured guidance through the complex curriculum. He remembers the day back in 1970 that he appeared for the MBBS entrance examination just after his intermediate class and could not crack the exam.

Learning that there is no upper age limit for candidates to appear for the NEET examination, he re-embarked his journey towards achieving his long-held dream in 2016 and finally paid off his hard work, clearing the highly competitive exam.
Family responsibilities and other obstacles to prepare for the exam failed before the retired SBI employee’s determination to achieve his dream. Pradhan secured a seat at the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), jumbling the social stereotype of age barriers. One of the motivations that Pradharn received was nowhere other than his family, especially his twin daughters, who were preparing for medical entrance examinations themselves.
However, the story of Pradhan has reassured the millions that with an urge for social service, the sense of purpose, and the commitment, nothing is a barrier to achieving what they wanted.
