New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday expressed “deep anguish” condemning the Pahalgam terrorist attack that killed at least 26 people and left 10 injured in Jammu and Kashmir. The Pahalgam terror attack is the largest civilian attack since the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

Calling it a “diabolical act of mindless violence”, the Supreme Court unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the act of terrorism. The top court also paid tribute to the victims who lost their lives in the terror attack.

A shadow group of the banned terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), called the Resistance Front (TRF), has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to central agencies.

“This diabolical act of mindless violence has shaken the conscience of all and is a stark reminder of the brutality and inhumanity that terrorism unleashes. The Supreme Court of India pays its respectful tribute to the innocent lives snuffed out brutally and prematurely while also expressing its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May the departed souls rest in peace, and may those who were injured recover soon,” said the court.

The court further added, “The nation stands with the victims and their families in this hour of indescribable grief. The attack on tourists, who were merely enjoying the natural beauty of the Crown Jewel of India, i.e. Kashmir, is undoubtedly an affront to the values of humanity and the sanctity of life, and this Court strongly condemns the same.”

The Supreme Court also observed a two-minute silence in memory of all those who died in the tragic attack.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that those who planned and carried out the Kashmir region’s worst attack on civilians in decades would see a swift response. “We won’t just reach those people who carried out the attack. We will also reach out to those who planned this from behind the scenes on our land,” he said.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the attack would be the biggest since the 2019 Pulwama incident, which targeted military vehicles, killing at least 40 CRPF personnel.
