The five day “Amrit Kaal” session of Parliament begins on September 18, a day after all party-meeting at national capital. The session will proceed with a discussion on the Parliament”s journey of 75 years. Eight bills including the controversial bill will be on the table to be discussed. Opposition parties expect surprise elements to be brought in by the Centre during the session.
- Parliament discussion will centre on Parliament’s 75-year history starting from Samvidhan Sabha – Achievements, Experiences, Memories and Learnings.
- Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar hoisted the national flag at the new Parliament building on Sunday morning.
- On September 19, before moving into the new Parliament building, there will be a photo session in old Parliament House followed by a function in Central Hall at 11 am.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge will be on the dais at the function in Central Hall.
- Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced that there are eight bills scheduled for discussion and approval. It includes an additional bill concerning the well-being of senior citizens and three bills to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe.
- A bill regarding the appointment of chief election commissioner and election commissioners will also be discussed. Though the bill was introduced in Rajya Sabha earlier during the Monsoon session, they failed to pass the bill due to the protest from Opposition.
- There is no official confirmation regarding the potential new legislation, but certain reports claims that few of the bill includes-The Repealing and Amending Bill, 2022, The Post Office Bill, 2023, The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023, The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023, Senior Citizens Welfare Bill, 2023 and The Constitution (SC/ST) Order, 2023.
- A bill to ensure quota for women in elected legislatures Lok Sabha and state assemblies will be discussed. When asked about the government’s stand, Joshi said, ““an appropriate decision at an appropriate time”.
- As per the Lok Sabha bulletin, the event will honour the rich history of Parliament and will make a commitment to make ‘Bharat’ a developed nation by 2047.
- Two rumoured topics to be discussed in the Parliament are the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill and renaming of India to ‘Bharat’.
