Breaking: Supreme Court Allows Killing Of Violent Stray Dogs
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday, May 19, allowed the euthanasia for rabid, incurably ill, or demonstrably dangerous stray dogs to curb the threat to human life.
The court issued a slew of directions to deal with the rising population of stray dogs in the country. The authorities are allowed to use euthanasia in areas where the stray dog population has reached alarming proportions and where frequent dog bites or aggressive attacks pose a continuing threat to public safety.

The direction came as part of the top court’s verdict on a batch of petitions seeking modification of its earlier order on relocation of stray dogs. Labelling the presence of dogs in public places as alarming, A bench of Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sandeep Mehta, and Justice NV Anjaria, while dismissing the petitions,
“Authorities may, in accordance with the Animal Birth Control rules and other applicable statutory protocols, take legally permissible measures, including euthanasia in cases involving incurably ill, rabid or demonstrably dangerous/aggressive dogs to effectively cure the threat posed to human life and safety,” the bench stated in its verdict.
