Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin marked the 100th anniversary of Sir John Marshall’s announcement regarding the discovery of the Indus Valley Civilisation (IVC).
Sir John Marshall, who was the Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) from 1902 to 1928, is credited to have led the excavations that led to the discovery of two key sites of the Indus Civilisation: Harappa and Mohenjo Daro. The discovery restored more than three thousand years of India’s pre-historic past.

Expressing his gratitude for Marshall’s significant contributions, the Chief Minister stated in an X post, “Exactly 100 years ago, on 20th September 1924, Sir John Marshall announced the discovery of the Indus Valley Civilisation, reshaping the history of the Indian subcontinent. I look back with gratitude and say, ‘Thank you, John Marshall.’”
Highlighting the importance of the renowned archaeologist’s achievements, Stalin stated that Marshall had linked the material culture of the Indus Valley Civilisation to the Dravidian stock “By taking right cognisance of the material culture of the IVC (Indus Valley Civilisation), he linked it to the Dravidian Stock,” Stalin observed.
The state chief minister added that the Tamil Nadu government will hold an international conference and install a life-size statue in honour of Marshall in the state. My government has already announced that the centenary of this historic discovery will be marked by an international conference and the installation of a life-size statue of Sir John Marshall in Tamil Nadu.

Previously, during a book launch event in April, Stalin said that is solid evidence to suggest that the inhabitants of the Indus Valley Civilisation were of Dravidian origin and were the ancestors of the Sangam-era poets.
