“To me, this one video alone epitomises the sense of equality, justice and compassion of Rahul Gandhi,” writes actress Simi Garewal, sharing a video of the Congress leader listening to the Dalit villagers and interacting with them at Bundelkhand in Uttar Pradesh, on her social media platform X.

The video showed the Wayanad MP attentively heeding the complaints of Dalit women deprived of basic rights. The video shows a Dalit lady saying that they cannot enter some village wearing slippers, and when they enter a village wearing slippers, they are called “bad omen.”

The woman goes on to explain that they will be asked “why they are wearing slippers.” When Rahul Gandhi asked about the people doing this to them, the woman said they were the upper castes such as Brahmins, Thakur and Ahirs.

She further says when invited to marriage functions, they and their children need to sit near garbage or the drains.  “We have endured this but our children cannot, they say the country is free, but we are not, I am very sad” the lady laments.

The woman then tells the Congress leader if he makes her wear the slipper she will wear it, otherwise will not. Rahul Gandhi was seen abruptly helping the elderly wear her slippers while asking her to do so.

When Rahul Gandhi asked how many Dalits are facing this, a man standing nearby said that around 90 percentage of Dalit women in the entire Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh are facing the same discrimination. “I knew this since I have been working for Dalits for two decades,” he claims. He was also heard saying that Dalit women from some other states and regions also facing similar issues, adding that they cannot wear slippers or even pass through the doors of the upper caste.
