At least three Muslim youth were killed allegedly by a police firing against a group of those who gathered to protest against a survey team who visited Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal on Sunday to conduct a survey of the mosque.
The survey team was acting following a court order on a complaint given by some Hindutva groups. The group alleged that the Mughals had dismantled a temple to build the historic Majid at the site. Several groups of the members of the Hindutva faction had also accompanied the survey team, chanting Jai Shri Ram, according to a report by Maktoob Media, citing local sources. The Hindu side has claimed that the mosque was built on the site of an ancient Harihar temple belonging to Lord Vishnu.

Crowd gathered around the Shahi Jama Masjid opposing the move allegedly pelted stones despite presence of heavy police force, according to a report by The Hindu.
However, despite the violence, a team of administrative officials carried out the survey of the 16th century structure, with the process being video graphed and photographed.
The Jama Masjid chief appealed the crowd gathered around the mosque to disperse.
