TMC MP Sushmita Dev Resigns From Rajya Sabha, Announces Exit From Party
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sushmita Dev on Wednesday resigned from the Rajya Sabha and announced her exit from the party, adding to the growing challenges facing the Mamata Banerjee-led organisation after its recent electoral setback in West Bengal.
Confirming her decision, Sushmita Dev said she was stepping down due to “personal and political reasons.”
While she did not reveal the exact reasons behind her resignation, she stated that she did not want to be in a situation where she was “in two boats.”

“What prompted me to take this decision is a very long story. In politics, everything does not need to be revealed,” she told reporters.
Her resignation comes shortly after she met Assam Chief Minister and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi. However, she clarified that the meeting was only a courtesy visit and should not be linked to her decision to quit the party.
Sushmita Dev joined the Trinamool Congress in 2021 after leaving the Congress party. She had represented Assam’s Silchar constituency in the Lok Sabha from 2014 to 2019 and later entered the Rajya Sabha as a TMC member.

The development comes just days after another TMC Rajya Sabha MP, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, resigned from both the Upper House and the party.
Ray had cited the party’s poor performance in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections as a reason for his exit.
The Trinamool Congress has been facing internal challenges since losing power in West Bengal. Reports of differences among party leaders have surfaced in recent weeks, with several leaders raising concerns about the party’s future direction.
Earlier this month, the TMC dissolved all its state committees and organisational units, announcing a comprehensive review of its structure and functioning.
