Travesty Of Justice: Shashi Tharoor On Mahua Moitra Report By Ethics Committee

As the report of Ethics Committee of Parliament recommending expulsion of Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra being tabled in the lower house amidst uproar from opposition benches, senior Congress leader and parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor said the report is ‘travesty of justice’. Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is likely to push it through a voice vote in the afternoon today.

The Ethics Committee report to the cash-for-query allegations against Ms Moitra comes amidst the claims by the Opposition and the TMC MP herself that the hearings by the Committee headed by ruling party MP as one sided. The report, that recommends that Ms Moitra be expelled, has already caused furore in the Parliament and Opposition MPs were seen protesting against the move as it was tabled. The report allegedly found that Ms Moitra”s actions “highly objectionable, unethical, heinous and criminal”.

The allegation against the TMC MP was that she took bribe from businessman Darshan Hiranandani, son of Indian billionaire businessman Niranjan Hiranandani, in exchange for her raising the specific question in the Parliament.

“It seems to have been adopted in two and a half minutes, according to one of the members. There has been no proper procedure followed, no attempt to cross-examine those who have made accusations and at the same time the conclusion of such a major punishment as expulsion of a Member – to arrive that without serious consideration is truly disgraceful,” Mr Tharoor said after calling it an “incredibly inadequate report”.

He also added that the Opposition, all the INDIA Alliance parties are completely convinced that this is a travesty of justice, and “it would set a very undesirable precedent for the future.

“All of this suggests to us a political vendetta and not a judicially sustainable process. It is most unfortunate that Parliament is being reduced to such a performance of political vendetta,” Mr Tharoor said.
