Youths from several states flocking to Haryana”s Rohtak, as an Israeli team is recruiting Indian labourers. Through the recruitment campaign, Israel is planning to recruit thousands of construction workers from India as former is facing labour shortage in their country. Due to its ongoing war with Palestinian group Hamas, Israel cancelled the work permits of large numbers of Palestinians has resulted in the recruitment.
Meanwhile, the unemployed youths appear for a skill test expressed their concern over job crisis in India and stressed the promise of better salaries in Israel. They added that the war situation is not deterring them from considering the job opportunity.
Recruitment To Israel: 10 Things To Know
1. The recruitment drive was organised following an agreement between the central government and the Israeli authorities. It has been carried out by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in collaboration with the Haryana Rozgar Kaushal Nigam Limited (HRKNL).
2. Applicants from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan, are participating but priority was given to individuals from Haryana. The drive will continue for six days, and focuses on construction, painting, and farming jobs.
3. These jobs in Israel, according to reports, is promising an attractive salary of Rs 1.34 lakh per month, yet lack details concerning contractual protections.
4. Activists and trade unions express that the Central government is overriding all protections normally exerted for Indian labour going abroad to conflict zones, the Hindu reports. Calling the move as “inhumane”, activists criticise that the government’s decision to hasten the recruitment process of Indian construction workers, nurses and caregiver in the current situation of Israel will put these people in danger.
5. “This step is against Indian ethos. We are for a ceasefire in Israel. We are concerned about the safety and security of workers,” The Hindu quotes as All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) general secretary Amarjeet Kaur is saying.
6. These workers are not even be needed to register themselves on the ‘e-migrate’ portal run by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the newspaper reports. All workers planning to work in conflict zones or places without sufficient labour protections are asked to register with the ‘e-migrate’ portal. However, the central government has not included Israel to the ‘e-migrate’ system.
7. Besides, several government ministries and agencies has refused to own any responsibility for the welfare and safety of the workers, it added.
8. As per the reports, Israeli authorities are planning to recruit 10,000 labourers in the first stage. According to the Builders Association in Israel, the number of recruits may rise to 30,000 in the near future, India Today reports.

Communist Party of India MP Binoy Viswam has written letter to external affairs minister S Jaishankar expressing apprehension over the safety of the Indian workers sent to Israel. “Even ordinary measures for protecting the workers like insurance or medical coverage are not being followed. . . . sending Indian citizens to the war zone in such a situation is not justifiable,” Times of India quotes the letter.
10. “I am aware of the threat in Israel due to the war with Hamas, but it”s better to die while working than to die of hunger without a job here in our state,” a candidate told TOI.
