Concerning the Uttarakhand tunnel collapse rescue operation, in the latest update, the officials who are leading it held a press conference today and informed about the deployment of ground-penetrating radar (GPR).
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) member Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain said on Friday, “The good news is that a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has been employed, allowing us to see up to 5 meters into the soil. This made us understand that there is no obstacle for the next 5 metres.”
“Hence, it is hoped that the auger”s movement will be smooth for up to 5 metres, after which the GPR will be used again to examine whether any further obstacles are present,” he added.
The rescue operation was temporarily paused due to a snag in a drilling machine. At present, rescue team has drilled up to 46.8 metres in the tunnel, and reportedly there left 10 to 13 metres distance between current drilling spot and where the workers are trapped. Friday marks 13th day where 41 workers are trapped under Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand.
“It”s a very challenging operation. A war is being fought to save the sons of India who have been toiling up there in the mountain, and the government of India is ensuring that no resources will be left which are required and have not been mustered for this particular rescue operation,” PTI quotes as Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain is saying.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways General (Retd) VK Singh continue to observe the rescue operation at the tunnel collapse site via monitor. The government raised a camp office at Matli near the collapse site.
