
56 Vacancies At ASI's Raiganj Circle: Culture Ministry
New Delhi: At present, a total of 56 vacancies at Raiganj Circle of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the Central government informed the Parliament on Thursday (July 31).
While responding to the question raised by Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya, Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said that filling up of vacancies is an ongoing process and the vacancies in ASI are filled up by promotion, deputation and direct recruitment.
Among the 56 vacancies in Raiganj Circle, 33 vacancies are related to Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS), the Minister said.

The Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) meetings are held regularly to fill open jobs by promoting current staff. Vacancies for deputation are announced according to official rules. The vacancies that fall under Direct Recruitment (DR) quota are immediately sent to recruiting agencies like UPSC and SSC.
When the Rajya Sabha MP asked about the monuments under the protection of ASI Raiganj and encroachments and unauthorised constructions affected by it, Minister replied that there are 52 protected monuments and protected areas (sites) under care and maintenance of Raiganj Circle.
“Unauthorised construction is reported at 28 monuments and encroachment is reported at 5 monuments,” the Minister added.
Continuing further, Minister stated that the ASI has taken action against encroachers at protected monuments by issuing Stop Notices to defaulters and writing to State or local authorities for taking appropriate action including filing police complaints.

The Minister detailed the measures taken to quell encroachments and remove them. The Superintending Archaeologist is authorised to issue show cause notices for encroachments. They also seek the help of the state government, police authorities and the central government for help to control and remove these encroachments.
Besides, regular guards and private security staff are also deployed at selectes sites. Also, regular inspections were held in order to assess conservation requirement and actions are taken accordingly.
