SC Denies Anticipatory Bail To Kannur Dental College professor Dr MK Ram In Kerala Dalit Student Nithin Raj's Suicide Case
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the anticipatory bail appeal filed by Kannur Dental College professor, Dr. M Kodanda Ram, who is accused of verbally harassing Nithin Raj, a Dalit student, who died by suicide in April this year.
While hearing the case, a Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta called the professor’s conduct as inhuman. The court further noted that the accused professor cannot walk away without facing consequences.

After 23-year-old Nithin Raj’s death in April this year, his collage friends accused their management and staff, especially Dr Ram, who is the head of the department at the dental college of of harassment and misconduct, which led to the student’s demise at the campus.
Nithin Raj had died allegedly by suicide after falling off the campus building at the Anjarakandy Dental College in Kannur. Police booked Dr Ram and two other staff for abetment of suicide and for offences under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 (SC/ST Act), based on a complaint by the student’s father.

The accused including Dr Ram had earlier approached a sessions court seeking anticipatory bail. While the session court granted relief toother accused, it denied the anticipatory bail to Dr Ram in the case.
Ram later approached High Court which also declined to grant him relief on June 19, and then he filed an appeal before the Supreme Court. With Supreme Court rejecting his appeal, police might arrest Dr Ram in connection with the case.
