Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud reprimanded a petitioner for his informal tone during a Supreme Court hearing on Monday and reminded him of the party-in-person about courtroom etiquette.
Seeking a probe against former CJI Ranjan Gogoi, the petitioner, while responding to a question by the top court, replied, “Yeah, yeah.”

Disapproving of the casual tone, the Chief Justice reminded him that the court is not a “coffee shop.”
Representing himself, the petitioner was challenging his “illegal termination” from service by former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, now a Rajya Sabha MP.
The CJI questioned whether the matter was appropriate for an Article 32 plea, which allows for direct appeals to the apex court for fundamental rights violations.
“Is this an Article 32 plea? How can you file a PIL with a judge as a respondent? There has to be some dignity,” the CJI said. The petitioner responded, “Yeah, yeah, the then CJI Ranjan Gogoi. I was asked to file a curative.”
Miffed with the casual lingo in the court, the Chief Justice remarked, “Don’t say, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah.’ Say ‘Yes.’ This is not a coffee shop. This is a court. I am a little allergic to people saying ‘yeah.’ This cannot be allowed.”
