The asset details of the former Kerala finance minister and CPI(M)”s Lok Sabha election candidate Thomas Isaac is astonishing. The details of the ex-minister’s assets was revealed by the LDF Pathanamthitta candidate in the affidavit filed along with his nomination papers on Saturday.

With no land, home, or gold in possession, the minister’s high-value asset is his collection of over 20,000 books with a total value of Rs 9.6 lakh which is safely kept where he resides in Thiruvananthapuram. Though one could only find him in different colorful designer kurtas, the trained economist and central committee member has only a deposit of Rs 6,000 in treasury savings bank in Thiruvananthapuram. Isaac also takes occasional visits to his daughter who resides in the ‘capitalist’ US.

The other listed asset includes Rs 68,000 in the pensioners’ treasury account, Rs 39,000 in the SBI savings account, Rs 36,000 in the KSFE Sugama account, and Rs 1.31 lakh a fixed deposit in KSFE.

Isaac”s affidavit further states that he has remitted Rs 77,000 in various installments of a chit fund in KSFE. Additionally, he has Rs 10,000 in hand as cash and shares worth Rs 10,000 in Malayalam communications.

Thomas Isaac, the 71-year-old politician, served as Kerala’s Finance Minister for two terms, from 2006 to 2011, and from 2016 to 2021. The veteran leader started his political life in 1971 with the Students Federation of India (SFI). He has served in various posts in the SFI at the college, district, and state levels. This includes the roles of SFI Ernakulam District President and President of the SFI State Committee.

Isaac submitted his nomination papers at around 11 am on Saturday before Pathanamthitta district collector Prem Krishnan. While submitting the nomination paper, he was accompanied by minister Veena George, MLAs Chittayam Gopakumar, Mathew M Thomas and Pramod Narayanan. He arrived at the collectorate in an open jeep accompanied by his party workers.

The 2024 Lok Sabha election is expected to be a tough battle for Thomas Issac, as Pathanamthitta is a known Congress-led UDF stronghold.
