According to a report, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will be finalising many of its candidates tomorrow (Friday). The party is likely to announce its first list of 100-odd candidates. As per the latest information, these 100 candidates would be for seats from Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, among others and the list would also be of weak seats that the party could not secure success in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
As per the report, the party has identified at least 165 weak consistencies ahead of the 2024 general election. The party leadership believe that announcing the names of candidates earlier for constituencies with less likelihood of success would benefit the party.
As the BJP Central Election Committee (CEC) is set to meet in Delhi today (Thursday), reports suggest that some of the veteran leaders of the party including Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah will be included in the first list of candidates, which the party would probably announce tomorrow.
The party has been conducting several meetings with state leaders in the past few days regarding the selection of candidates for the constituencies. The party in its national executive conference held on February 17-18 expressed its confidence of on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term.
The Prime Minister speaking at the event said that the party need to reach every new voter, noting that he was living for the future of youth, children and women. Union Home Minister Amit Shaw, speaking at the same event expressed his confidence in the party retaining power in the upcoming general election.
However, the Prime Minister this time also seeks to break the record of the longest-serving prime minister of the country. It was India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru who have had three terms, maintaining his tenure for 16 years, until his death in 1964.
