In a closely contested battle, early trends in the Delhi election results show the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leading on four seats, while the opposition INDIA bloc is ahead on three seats.
This election marks the first time Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have contested in an alliance under a four-three seat-share formula. In the Chandni Chowk seat, Congress candidate Jai Prakash Agarwal is leading by a margin of over 3,200 votes.
The BJP’s candidates include Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi, Bansuri Swaraj from New Delhi, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri from South Delhi, and others who are leading in BJP seats. Meanwhile, the AAP has fielded candidates such as Kuldeep Kumar from East Delhi and Somnath Bharti from New Delhi, who haven’t opened their accounts yet.
In North East Delhi Kanhaiya Kumar is trailing, and BJP candidate Manoj Tiwari’s lead comes down to a little over 7000 votes.
Delhi Congress interim president Devendra Yadav expressed optimism, stating that the INDIA alliance would form a strong government. Voter turnout in the national capital was over 58 per cent, a slight decline from the 2019 general election.
In the last two general elections, the BJP won all seven seats in Delhi and is aiming for another clean sweep. However, the combined efforts of AAP and Congress under the INDIA bloc banner are expected to present a significant challenge.
