“Guess No Copyrights For Political Messaging”: Rajdeep Sardesai On The Word ‘Guarantee’ In Indian Elections

Edited by Fazal Rahman Chembulangad

Journalist Rajdeep Sardesai today shared a political post on his social media platform X regarding the use of ‘Guarantee’ by political parties ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With the caption ‘interesting,’ Mr Sardesai wrote that the word guarantee was first used by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the 2020 Delhi assembly elections and the party won the electoral battle.

The journalist continued that the word then was used by the Congress party in the 2021 Assam elections but lost the elections to the BJP. The Congress then used the word in the 2022 Himachal Pradesh assembly elections and 2023 Karnataka elections, both emerged victorious, Sardesai wrote.

He then said that the BJP took the cue and used the word for the first time in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan elections in 2023. The journalist then points out that the Congress has moved to a more abstract word ‘Nyay’ while the BJP made it like Modi Ki Guarantee. He also notes that the BJP’s word has become Modi Ki Guarantee and that it is ‘not even BJP Ki guarantee’

The journalist at the end of his post sarcastically commented that the AAP and Congress came up with a “good idea which Modi-led BJP borrows and runs with to make their calling card.” “Guess there are no copyrights for political messaging,” Rajdeep Sardesai penned in his post on X (formerly Twitter).

Ahead of the upcoming general election scheduled to start this month, the BJP is campaigning aggressively raising the ‘Modi Ki Guarantee’ slogans. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi is vying for the equal record of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaher Nehru with the third consecutive term, even the rest of the members of the saffron party have made their address as ‘Modi Ka Parivaar.’

The BJP is wooing voters using Modi’s purported popularity, claiming India’s rising global image and Hindutva. However, Congress has also raised the word ‘Congress guarantee’ though not as strong as the BJP ahead of the general elections. The 2023 general elections appear to be a fight between the ‘Congress guarantee’ and ‘Modi ki Guarantee’
