After a long years of battle, Telugu Desam Party is having a ray of hope in Nellore Lok Sabha constituency. The party’s Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy is leading with 1,59,362 votes. While YSRCP’s V Vijayasai Reddy is at the second place, Congress is lagging far behind.
In Nellore, it was Reddy vs Reddy battle. YSRCP’s (Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party) V Vijayasai Reddy and TDP’s (Telugu Desam Party) Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy, was the key players on the field. Since 1952, when the constituency was formed, Congress had a straight win till 2009, with TDP managing to win the seat for once in 1999.
However, during the 2012 by-poll, YSRCP won the seat, and since then, Nellore is under the clasp of Jagan Mohan Reddy’s party. Notably, this is the first time both the Reddys are contesting taking part in a Lok Sabha electoral battle. While Vijayasai Reddy is currently serving as the Rajya Sabha member, Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy is a former Rajya Sabha member.
TDP, which has faced defeat seven times in Nellore, believed that the political dynamics of the region has changed highly, and people harboured a growing dissatisfaction with the ruling YSRCP. Since the formation of the constituency in 1952, TDP has won only once in 1999.
In the 2019, Lok Sabha election, Adala Prabhakar Reddy clinched victory over the majority of 148,571 votes. He was a TDP member, and joined YSRCP, after he was announced as the contestant from Nellore. Before joining TDP, he served was affiliated to the Indian National Congress.
In 2014 Lok Sabha election, YSRCP’s Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy won the seat by contesting against Prabhakar Reddy, who contested on the TDP ticket.
