The Janata Dal (United) has once again fielded sitting MP Dileshwar Kamat from Bihar’s Supaul Lok Sabha constituency in the hopes of securing another term. Kamat is pitted against Lalu Prasad Yadav’s party RJD candidate Chandrahas Chaupal, an MLA from Sinheshwar in Madhepura district.
Vishwa Mohan Kumar was elected as the JD(U) candidate from the Lok Sabha seat, defeating Congress’ Ranjit Ranjan by a margin of 1.5 lakh votes in the 2009 elections. However, Ranjan wrested the seat back in the subsequent elections with 3.3 lakh votes, while Kamat secured 2.7 lakh votes. The JD(U) was able to secure another victory over the Lok Sabha seat, with Kamat winning in 2019 with a whopping 5.9 lakh votes.
RJD’s Chaupal promised that unlike the current MP, he would not be missing from the constituency. While criticising Kamat, he said that the people of Supaul deserve a young MP who will help develop the constituency, unlike Kamat, who he claimed to be older and thus couldn’t travel across the region efficiently, quoted Amar Ujala.
Scheduled for elections on May 7, the ruling JD(U) expressed its confidence in Kamat. According to political analysts, the competition between the JD(U) candidate and the Mahagathbandhan candidate will be tough. Dominated by the Yadav community, the Supaul Lok Sabha seat will be strongly influenced by caste dynamics. Yet other communities, such as Brahmins, Rajputs, and Muslim voters, could potentially influence the results.
In the 2020 assembly elections, out of the six legislative segments, four were won by the JD(U) while one seat each was won by the BJP and the RJD.
The Supaul Lok Sabha constituency comprises Vidhan Sabhas such as Nirmali, Pipra, Supaul, Chhatapur, Triveniganj (SC reserved), and Singheshwar (SC).
