Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: The Young Guns Who Lost The Battle

As the Results of 2024 Lok Sabha elections declared on Tuesday, here are some young candidates who lost in the field of battle. All the political parties have fielded a few young candidates in the poll fray. While some of the young candidates have been elected to 18th Lok Sabha, many of them lost the battle across the country.

Shanavas Ali Raihan

Shanavas Ali Raihan, 42, was the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) candidate, who contested from Malda Dakshin constituency in West Bengal. The young candidate finished third bagging 3,01,026 votes against Congress’s Isha Khan Choudhury and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury from the Muslim dominated Malda Dakshin constituency. Isha Khan Choudhury of Congress secured win in the constituency with a margin of 1,28,368 votes.

Presently, he is a Doctoral Researcher in Modern History at the University of Oxford. He has completed Master of Arts from Jamila Milia Islamia in 2008 and Rabindra Bharati University in 2005.

Dipsita Dhar

Dipsita Dhar was the Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate who has lost from Srerampur Parliamentary constituency in West Bengal. The 30-year-old young comrade has lost the poll against Kalyan Banerjee of All India Trinamool Congress and BJP’s Kabir Shankar Bose. The young candidate has secured 2,39,146 votes.

Dipsita Dhar is a student activist working as the all India Joint Secretary of the Central Executive Committee of the Student Federation of India (SFI). She has completed Bachelor of Science from University of Calcutta, Master of Arts and Master of Philosophy from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.

Sowmya Reddy

Sowmya Reddy is the Congress candidate who has contested from Bangalore South Lok Sabha constituency and lost to Tejasvi Surya, a young and popular face of BJP. The young Congress candidate was defeated with a margin of 2,77,083 votes. Sowmya has secured 4,73,747 votes and finished in the second spot in the poll results.

Earlier Sowmya was the member of Karnataka Vidhan Sabha from Jayanagar assembly seat in 2018.  Presently, she is serving as the General Secretary of All India Mahila Congress. She is the daughter of senior Congress leader Ramalinga Reddy, who served as the home minster in the previous Congress cabinet.

Sowmya Reddy, 41, has completed Bachelor of Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka

Kanhaiya Kumar

Former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union President Kanhaiya Kumar has lost the 18th Lok Sabha elections against BJP’s Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi constituency. The young former CPI leader garnered 6,85,673 votes as the Congress candidate, which he has joined in September 2021.Presently, he is serving as All India Congress Committee (AICC) in charge of National Students Union of India (NSUI).

Kanhaiya, 37, has completed Graduation in Geography from Magadh University, MA Sociology from Nalanda Open University, M Phil and Doctoral of Philosophy from Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2019.

V Vaseef

V Vaseef was the youngest candidate of CPI(M) Kerala, who was fielded in Malappuram Parliamentary constituency. The young candidate has lost the polls against IUML’s veteran leader ET Muhammed Basheer, a two term MP from the Ponnani Lok Sabha constituency. Vaseef has bagged 3,43,888 votes against Muhammad Basheer and BJP’s Dr Abdul Salam. The IUML candidate has won the seat with margin of massive 3,00,118 votes.

Vaseef, 40, a native of Kodiyathur in Kozhikode, is the current President of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) Kerala, the youth wing of CPM. He has completed MEd from University of Calicut and presently working as a Higher Secondary teacher in FMHSS Koombara, Kozhikode.

Anil K Antony

Son of former Congress Chief Minister AK Antony and National Secretary of BJP, Anil K Antony, has lost his maiden match from Pathanamthitta in Kerala. The young saffron leader has lost the election to Congress candidate Anto Antony, who won a triangular election with a margin 66,119 votes from the Pathanamthitta seat. Pathanamthitta was counted as a Kerala seat in which BJP’s hopes were high.

Anil Antony serves as the National Spokesperson of ruling party since April 2023, after quitting Congress. He has completed MSc in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University, USA.

Annamalai K

BJP Tamil Nadu President Annamalai K has conceded defeat in Coimbatore Parliamentary constituency against Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)’s Ganapathy Rajkumar. The young saffron leader has lost the seat with a margin of massive 1,18,068 votes against DMK candidate. Annamalai has secured 4,50,132 votes from Coimbatore, the constituency in which BJP expecting a victory with the attention it gathered during and before the election period.

39-year-old Annamalai is a former IPS Officer of the Karnataka cadre, joined the BJP in 2019 and became president of party’s Tamil Nadu unit in 2021. He has completed MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, in 2010.
