Lok Sabha Polls: Rahul Gandhi Files Nomination From Wayanad

Edited by Aishwarya Krishnan

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has filed his nomination from the Lok Sabha constituency of Wayanad in Kerala ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Before filing his nomination, the party held a massive roadshow in Wayanad, where huge crowds of supporters gathered to see the Lok Sabha candidate.

Rahul Gandhi was accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, AICC general secretaries KC Venugopal and Deepa Dasmunshi, KPCC acting president MM Hassan, and Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan.

During the roadshow, Rahul Gandhi said that he does not consider the people of Wayanad like an electorate but rather treats them like his younger sister, Priyanka. “So, in the house of Wayanad, I have sisters, mothers, fathers, and brothers. And I thank you from the bottom of my heart for that,” he added, as quoted by the Times of India.

While highlighting the issues faced by the constituency, the Wayanad candidate said that he stands with the people in their fight regarding the man-animal conflict and the issue of medical college. He assured the crowd that both issues will be resolved when the party secures a government in Delhi and Kerala.

“Wayanad gave me love, affection, respect, and treated me as their own,” the sitting MP added, thanking the gathered public for their support and solidarity.

The Congress leader has won the Wayanad seat in the 2019 elections with a significant margin of over four lakh votes. The party said that the Congress candidate had arrived by helicopter at a village in Wayanad called Muppainad and had travelled by road till Kalpetta.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has fielded its senior leader, Annie Raja, for the Wayanad constituency. The left in the state had demanded that Rahul Gandhi choose to fight from a constituency against the saffron party instead of standing against the INDIA bloc. The BJP has nominated Kerala BJP Chief K Surendran as its candidate for the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency.
