The Patiala Lok Sabha constituency, a significant electoral region in Punjab, is speculating an intense tussle as the counting of votes progresses. As an expected turn, seasoned politician Preneet Kaur of BJP is trailing behind Dharamvir Gandhi, who is running as a Congress candidate. Kaur is trailing by 4763 votes, and BJP is currently in third position in Patiala behind Congress and AAP.
Punjab as a whole, congress is ahead in 6 seats, and AAP in 3, as the BJP is yet to open their account in the Patiala constituency.
Patiala, consisting of the entire Patiala district and eight Vidhan Sabha segments: Patiala Rural, Patiala, Rajpura, Samana, Ghanaur, Nabha, Sanour, and Shutrana, has a population of approximately 19 lakhs. The constituency has seen significant political shifts over recent years.
In the 2019 General Elections, Preneet Kaur secured a decisive victory with 532,027 votes, defeating Surjit Singh Rakhra of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) by 162,718 votes. The voter turnout was 67.79%.
However, recent reports indicate a narrow loss for Preneet Kaur in the Lok Sabha Election 2024 as the vote counting progresses bestowing a winning chance for the Congress candidate Dharamvir Gandhi in Patiala.
