The counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections, which will decide whether PM Narendra Modi makes a comeback or a resurgent Opposition triumphs, has begun. Three hours into the counting, the NDA is past the majority mark, but the INDIA alliance is putting up a strong fight.
A significant surprise is emerging in Uttar Pradesh, where most exit polls had predicted a BJP advantage. As of 12.20 pm, the INDIA bloc, including the Samajwadi Party, holds a slender lead over the NDA in an intense contest.
In other key battleground states, the BJP is trailing in West Bengal and Maharashtra. However, these are early trends with many rounds of counting still to go.
Voting took place for 543 Lok Sabha seats over seven phases, concluding on Saturday. The majority mark stands at 272.
Simultaneously, votes are being counted for assembly elections in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. In Andhra Pradesh, the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP is leading three hours into the counting. In Odisha, the BJP has taken a lead over the ruling BJD.
The BJP aims to make significant gains in Bengal, Odisha, and the southern states to counter any losses in the north, where it remains the dominant party. Other key battleground states include Maharashtra, Odisha, Karnataka, and Telangana.
