CJI Asks To Conduct Interviews To Ensure More Women Participation At Bar Chambers

The Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has asked senior advocates to recruit juniors to their chambers through interviews and fair assessments instead of connecting through connections or contacts. CJI was speaking at the farewell ceremony of Justice Hima Kohli, the ninth woman judge of the Supreme Court.

DY Chandrachud said that women have excelled when a level playing field is provided to them. The CJI highlighted the issue of the lack of a level playing field for women in the legal profession and requested seniors to stop recruiting people in senior chambers purely based on networks, friends children, etc.

CJI said that following the option of inviting applications for interviews will ensure a level playing field for the candidates and in turn would ensure greater women participation at the bar.

“The Supreme Court Bas Association (SCBA) can put out a list of seniors who are recruiting and then applications can be made for the interviews. Level playing field shows that women will succeed”, CJI said.

During his address, he mentioned his interaction with young judicial officers from the Delhi judicial academy at the Lok Adalat. The increaseing participation of women in the Delhi district judiciary reflects how the level playing filed works in the judiciary, he said.

Praising the Justice Kohli’s professional status, CJI spoke about her sensitivity and sound judicial making and using her voice for women in legal profession. He said that to succeed in the profession, you do not have to forsake your faminity.

CJI Chandrachud said, “Every women professional brings a degree of compassion in this profession and to succeed here you don’t have to think like a man but bring the best traits of a woman”.
