“We are deeply grieved by the passing of veteran Congress leader and former union minister Shri EVKS Elangovan. A stalwart leader, he served as the Tamil Nadu PCC President and devoted his life to the service of the people,” a statement from the Congress said.
Elangovan, a seasoned politician from Tamil Nadu, has played a pivotal role in shaping the Congress party’s presence in Tamil Nadu over the years. Born into a political family, he is the son of veteran leader EVK Sampath, who was instrumental in the Dravidian movement’s early stages. This legacy positioned Elangovan as a bridge between the Dravidian ideologies and the Congress party’s broader national vision.

Elangovan has served as a Member of Parliament, representing the Gobichettipalayam constituency, and has also held key positions within the party, including Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President. His tenure as a Union Minister of State for Textiles during the UPA government further cemented his reputation as a leader with a deep understanding of governance and policy-making. Known for his ability to articulate the party’s stand on critical issues, he has been a vocal critic of regional parties’ dominance in Tamil Nadu, consistently advocating for a more significant role for the Congress in state politics.
“He will always be remembered for his unwavering commitment to progressive and democratic ideals. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and followers during this difficult time,” the Congress statement said.
