The Department of Drug Administration of Nepal has barred the sale and distribution of Biotax 1gm manufactured by an Indian company, citing serious health concerns.

The antibiotic injection has been banned after it was found to be non-compliant with the specifications of the production, according to The Kathmandu Post, the national daily of the country.

Manufactured by Ahmedabad-based Zydus Healthcare Ltd., the Biotax 1 gm injection is an antibiotic medication used for the treatment of bacterial infections affecting several parts of the body, such as the brain, ear, skin, bones and joints, lungs, urinary tract, blood, and heart. The injection is also used to prevent infections during surgical procedures.

Pramod KC, the spokesperson at the department, stated that they have directed the production company, importers, and distributors to “immediately suspend sales, imports, and distribution of the said medicine until further notice,” as quoted by The Kathmandu Post.

He stated that serious issues were detected in the Biotax 1 gm which led to the ban. As per the findings of the department, the Biotax 1 gm batch F300460 is unsafe for use and could potentially risk the lives of patients. “Decisions about further actions will be taken once the investigation is completed,” he added.

The report also stated that it was routine for the regulatory agency to collect drugs from pharmacies across the country through random sampling methods to test them in their laboratories for the purpose of compliance with quality standards.
