When US Imposed Danctions On India Over S-400 Sudarshan Chakra Deal With Russia?

In October 2018, India and Russia signed a USD 5 billion deal to buy five units of the S-400 air defence missile systems. India came under the threat of the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) by the US. The US administration brought CAATSA in 2017, which gave punitive actions by the US government against any country engaged in transactions with the Russian defence and intelligence sectors.

India’s decision to acquire the S-400 missile defence system from Russia was seen as a direct contravention of CAATSA. The US administration warned India about the potential for sanctions if it moves forward to sign the deal with Russia.

S-400 is Russia’s most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile defence system. It can counter attacks up to 600 kilometres and intercept them at a distance of up to 400 kilometers.

The US had imposed sanctions on Turkey under CAATSA for purchasing a batch of S-400 missile defence systems from Russia. However, in 2022, US House of Representatives passed voice vote a legislative amendment waiver to India against CAATSA sanctions for purchase of S-400 missile defence system against China.
