Even in the twilight zone of his career, MS Dhoni remains one of the hottest properties for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The five-time IPL champion decided to step down as CSK captain and hand over the baton to opener Ruturaj Gaikwad last season where the franchise bowed out in the group stage. He has now rested his decision to continue playing in the lucrative tournament on the rules set by the IPL governing council and the BCCI for the IPL 2025 auction.
“There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court.
“So, once the rules and regulations get formarlised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team,” Dhoni said as he answered a fan’s question during a promotional event in Hyderabad.
It is also speculated that the impact player substitution rule can play a major role in Dhoni’s future as it can help him to prolong his career as a substitute batter. He batted in eight matches in the IPL 2024, scoring 161 runs at an average of 53.67, with the highest score of an unbeaten 37 and a staggering strike rate of 220.55.
Earlier, on Wednesday, the IPL owners met to discuss agendas like the size of the auction, a cap on overseas players, a Right-to-Match (RTM) card, and player retentions.
