Charith Asalanka To Lead Sri Lanka In T20I Series vs India; Dinesh Chandimal Returns

Charith Asalanka is set to take over the captaincy from Wanindu Hasaranga while veteran Dinesh Chandimal makes a return to the side for the upcoming three-match T20I series against India, starting on Saturday.

The batting all-rounder was in line to lead the island nation after he captained them during the T20I series against Bangladesh earlier this year when Hasaranga was serving his suspension. He also has the experience of leading Sri Lanka U-19s and Jaffna Kings in the Lankan Premier League (LPL).

Meanwhile, Chandimal makes a return to the national team for the first time since 2022, on the back of his brilliant performance in the LPL where he accumulated 287 runs across eight matches at a strike rate of 168.82. However, senior all-rounder Angelo Mathews has been left out of the squad despite a fine run in the LPL earlier this year.

The home series against India will also mark the return for Kusal Perera, Avishka Fernando, and Binura Fernando while Sadeera Samarawickrama, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Dilshan Madushanka were overlooked during the selection process.

Sri Lanka squad: Charith Asalanka (capt), Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Janith Perera (wk), Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis (wk), Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Chamindu Wickramasinghe, Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara, Dushmantha Chameera, Binura Fernando
