Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has confirmed his retirement from T20s, making way for newcomers ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The former Bangladesh captain has discussed his decision with his board after representing his nation in 129 matches, where he accumulated 2551 runs and scalped 149 wickets.
“I have played my last T20 match in the T20 World Cup. We have discussed this with the selectors. Looking at the 2026 World Cup, this is the right time for me to move out. Hopefully, BCB will find some great players, and we will perform well,” Shakib said.
Furthermore, his decision to retire from Test cricket has been hit by a major dilemma after he was named as an accused in a murder case by the Adabor police station during the political turmoil in his country.
However, it is likely that the great all-rounder, will play his last Test in Bangladesh.
“It’s my desire (to retire). I’ve shared it with the BCB and the selectors. They have agreed with me. They are trying to organise everything in the best possible way so that I can go back to Bangladesh and play those two Test matches, or that match in Mirpur, and finish my Test career there. And then when we play a series abroad, I can go out of the country safely,” the all-rounder said.
“To play that (as my last) match is my desire. If that doesn’t happen, then this will be my last match.
Hasan displayed a decent performance with the bat during the Chennai Test against India, scoring 32 and 25 while remaining wicketless. He will be hoping to put his best foot forward in the Kanpur Test, starting Friday, to bring the visitors back on level terms in the two-match series.
