The storm is supposed to pass Barbados on Monday, with its center approximately 128 km off the South Coast. The National Hurricane Center on Monday announced that: “Beryl still a very dangerous category 4 hurricane.” However, as per a report in the Independent, the storm weakened to category 3.
“A life-threatening storm surge will raise water levels by as much as 6 to 9 feet above normal tide levels in areas of onshore flow near where the eye makes landfall in the hurricane warning area,” it added.
As the Hurricane Beryl moves to the West, winds of up to 130 mph are expected, as per multiple media reports. The Hurricane warnings are also placed in provinces like Barbados, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadine Islands, and Grenada.
The airport in Barbados is shut down due to the storm situation. The Rohit Sharma-led side were expected to depart to Mumbai on a chartered flight but were unable to do so due to the airports being shut since Sunday evening.
“Like you, we are also stuck here. After the travel plans are clear, we will think about the felicitation,” Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah said to reporters in Barbados.
The Indian cricket team won their fourth World Cup after 1983, 2007, and 2011. It was their first ICC title after their Champions Trophy triumph in 2013.
Following the triumph, Team India greats Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirements from the shortest format.
