In a fresh new development, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed three-time Olympian Vinesh Phogat’s plea for a joint-silver medal at Paris 2024 on Wednesday, with a detailed order expected to be announced on or before August 16 at 6 pm (CET).
The verdict signed by the sole arbitrator Annabelle Bennett stated: “The application filed by Vinesh Phogat on 7 August 2024 is dismissed. A detailed order is expected in the coming days.”
However, as per multiple media reports from France, Phogat has been denied a silver medal at the Paris 2024. Following the reports, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Dr. PT Usha has expressed her shock and disappointment at the decision of the Sole Arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to dismiss wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s application against the United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), as per a report in ANI.
Beijing 2008 bronze medallist Vijender Singh, in an interview to ANI said, “This is a very sad and unfortunate thing for us…We could have won gold in the Olympics if she had made it through the finals. We are standing with Vinesh and will always support her…This is a sad news and I am not happy with this news…”
For the unversed, the two-time World Championships bronze medallist was disqualified ahead of the final, for failing to meet her weight by a little over 100 gms. The premier Indian wrestler and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had appealed to the CAS for a joint silver medal alongside Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman.
Phogat will be arriving in India after an official announcement from the highest sports court on August 17. On her arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, there will be a road show from the national capital to her hometown in Haryana’s Balali.
