Vinesh Phogat Hospitalised After Heartbreaking Disqualification

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Wednesday soon after being disqualified from the women’s 50 kg freestyle final, was hospitalised in Paris. The 29-year-old, who became the first Indian woman wrestler to make the final at the Olympics edition, fainted due to dehydration, as per the media reports. 

Phogat, who was scheduled to compete against USA’s Sarah Hilderbrandt in the final on Wednesday evening, is now admitted to the polyclinic of the Olympic Village. As per the Economic Times report, the wrestler is being administered IV fluids. Despite the best efforts of Vinesh, her coaches, and support staff, which included extreme measures like cutting her hair and trying to draw out blood, they could not achieve the desired results, reports India Today.

Meanwhile, Prime minister Narendra Modi spoke with IOA President PT Usha to get firsthand information on the issue and to check any option to get her back on the games. As per the rule, “If an athlete does not attend or fails the weigh-in, he/she will be eliminated from the competition and ranked last without rank.”

“It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests respect for Vinesh’s privacy and would like to focus on the ongoing competitions,” the Indian Olympic Association said in a statement.

On each day of the competition, all the competing wrestlers will have medical examination and weigh-in. Each boxer is also given a post-bout medical examination.

Earlier on Tuesday, the wrestler had scripted history by becoming the first woman to reach the final of a wrestling event in Olympic games. She won the semi-finals by after defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez to confirm a medal.
