As of September 2024, out of 6,44,131 villages in the country, around 6,22,840 villages are having internet coverage, the Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar informed the Parliament today.

21,291 Villages In India Do Not Have Internet Coverage: Government

New Delhi: As of September 2024, out of 6,44,131 villages in the country, around 6,22,840 villages are having internet coverage, the Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar informed the Parliament today. The minister was responding to a question asked by MP Delkar Kalaben Mohanbhai in the Lok Sabha today.

As per the data provided by the Communications ministry, as of September 2024, 21,291 villages in India do not have internet coverage.

The minister also informed the lower house of the Parliament that all 95 villages in Dadra and Nagar Haveli (including Daman & Diu), are covered with internet connectivity as of Sep 2024.

As per information furnished by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), total Internet connections in Dadra and Nagar Haveli (including Daman & Diu) as of March 2024, are 8,35,247, he added.

As of March 2024, India has over 820 million active internet users, with 442 million from rural areas. Internet penetration grew 8% year-on-year in 2023. Rural users now outnumber urban ones, though half remain inactive. Urban users spend more time online, and men outpace women in usage.

Video and audio OTT dominate internet use, with rising smart device adoption. One in five watches video exclusively online, and social media shopping is growing. Music streaming rose 8%, and digital platforms are now key for news access. Local languages are increasingly popular, while voice commands and shared device usage also gain traction.
