Apple, the Cupertino-based technology company has filed a new patent for a ranking system of Wi-Fi networks to identify the quality and security of public networks. The patent grants a new system to detect public Wi-Fi networks rather than identifying the user and location. USPTO (US Patent and Trademark Office) issued the new patent to Apple on July 16 intended to map public access points.
The data will be kept hidden without identifying the user device or locations connecting to a common public source. The Patent is titled ‘Crowd Sourced Privacy-Preserving Access Point Mapping.’ As the Public Wi-Fi network can be unsafe and result in data breaches this new system may help identify networks based on different criteria that will be used to detect Wi-Fi access points and give feedback on the security of that particular network.
There will be a restored selection page when the feature starts to roll out on iPhones. The page will show every available network from various devices and be sent to the server to identify spam. The server will make a detailed study of the access points credibility and their characteristics describing the Wi-Fi network which is popular and suspicious in the settings app. The system will alert users if they want to connect to the public Wi-Fi network identifying the potential risk.

This would allow users to connect to a public network easily without data theft concerns disclosing their identity. The information and details regarding the connection can help people to choose the nearby networks and identify spam with this new system standing as a first party solution for security issues in Apple devices.
