Apple has released the much-anticipated iOS 17.3 update for the iPhones, along with the iPadOS 17.3 update. iOS 17.3, which was rolled out on January 22, includes several new features. The introduction of the Stolen Device Protection feature is the highlight of the new iOS update.
The all-new Stolen Device Protection is a security feature introduced by Apple to prevent iPhone thieves from gaining complete control over the victim’s iPhone and online accounts. This opt-in feature will work as an extra layer of security to protect the user”s data, even if the passcode of the iPhone has been compromised. The Verge reported that the new feature requires users to scan their fingerprint or use Face ID when performing certain actions. This includes viewing saved passwords or applying for a new Apple Card.
Notably, there will also be a waiting period when performing sensitive actions, like changing the Apple ID password or the iPhone passcode. “Security Delay requires Face ID or Touch ID, an hour wait, and then an additional successful biometric authentication before sensitive operations like changing device passcode or Apple ID password can be performed,” said the iPhone maker in the update note. Apple mentioned on its support page that the Stolen Device Protection feature adds a layer of security when the iPhone is away from familiar locations, such as home or work, and helps protect accounts and personal information of users in case their iPhone is ever stolen.
To enable this feature, users are required to open the Settings app and tap on Face ID and Passcode. Then, users need to enter the device passcode and toggle the Stolen Device Protection feature on. Apart from this feature, the new Apple update also brings Collaborative Playlists and a new Unity Lock Screen wallpaper. The Collaborative Playlists permit users to select any of their existing playlists or create a new one and then invite others to join in to add songs. Notably, Apple has also expanded the AirPlay functionality.
